New date set for Smelly Dube’s hearing

    Smelly Dube.

HARARE - Gweru land baron, Smelly Dube is finally expected to appear before the Commission of Inquiry into the sale of State land in and around urban areas on Monday after many weeks of false starts.
Dube appeared before the same Commission in Bulawayo last year to answer to her land development projects in that city that had become mired in controversy. The Commission is investigating allegations of illegal sale of urban State land.
However, efforts to bring Dube to testify in Gweru on projects that she developed in the Midlands capital, in Shurugwi and Zvishavane hit a snag as she on three occasions submitted medical reports indicating that she was ill and not fit to appear before the Commission. Dube and her husband how-ever, flew out of the country a few days later to attend an awards ceremony and a conference in the UK.
The Commission issued several stern warnings to Dube whom it accused of acting contemptuously to its work.
A report of part of the Commission’s hearings has since been submitted to the President and one of the highlights is that there are land barons who are frustrating the Constitutional body’s work by refusing to appear before it.
Dube’s case has seen several journalists being implicated in the investigations after allegedly receiving unexplained funds from Dube’s companies.
Those who have appeared are ZBC manager Jackie Gwemende who allegedly got three stands from Dube’s River Valley Properties and Gweru based Herald reporter Freedom Mupanedemo after he allegedly received several EcoCash payments from Dube’s companies.
Both journalists dismissed insinuations that they were bribed by the companies although they acknowledged receipt of the property or money.
Many senior civil servants and soldiers were also summoned before the Commission to explain the money that they were receiving from Dube’s companies.
