Gov lawyer accused of receiving $2 290 from Smelly Dube

    Smelly Dube

HARARE- A former legal officer with the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Water, Climate and Rural Settlements Nyasha Mupita (33) has appeared before the Commission of Inquiry into the sale of urban State land accused of receiving $2 290 from Gweru land developer, Smelly Dube.
He appeared before the Commission in Harare yesterday, Wednesday 14 August 2019.
Mupita who is now seconded to the Zimbabwe Special Economic Zones refuted the allegations that he received money through EcoCash from Dube who is the managing director of River Valley Properties, a company that has thousands of stands in Gweru, Zvishavane and Shurugwi.
The Commission challenged Mupita to produce his EcoCash records for the period 2013 to 2019 which he refused arguing that the Commission was infringing on his rights.
One of the Commissioners asked Mupita if he ever received any money from Dube’s company to which he said no. He was further asked whether he did not get $200 via EcoCash on August 13, 2018 to which he said no. He was asked again whether he did not receive another $200 on August 11 2018 and the total that he received was $2 290 to which he said no but was going to verify.
It is then that he was asked to produce his statement and he said he will only do that through his lawyer.
The Commission said that they will make a printout of the transactions and show them to Mupita. The Commission said that it will call Mupita again but did not say when.
The hearing became quite tense with Mupita getting visibly angry at the questions. He expressed displeasure that the Commission was asking him to go and get his printouts and described the print outs as private.
‘’You are saying I received such an amount of money and requesting me to bring my EcoCash statement, just show me where you are getting that. Why can’t you share what you have on your computer so I see for myself? I am being accused of having received the said money but you are denying me an oppotunity to see where you are getting the information,” fumed Mupita
The Commission’s investigations centred on the role Mupita played in the land dispute between the late Luke Hove and River Valley Properties.  The Commission alleged that one of the brothers to the late Hove who is the administrator of the late Luke Hove’s estate alleged that Mupita persuaded him to forgo the offer letter which he had for the A2 plot to River Valley in exchange of another piece of land.
Mupita denied ever persuading Hove but that he merely acted within his jurisdiction.
Mupita acknowledged knowing Dube both professionally and personally.
“I have a professional and personal relationship with Dube dating back to my days at the Ministry of Lands,” said Mupita
He appeared at pains to explain what he meant by personal relationship.
