Food aid stalled over state of Birchenough Bridge- Murambinda Road

BUHERA – Hundreds of villagers in parts of Buhera District have gone for three months without getting food aid because of the bad state of Murambinda – Birchenough Bridge Road which has seen private transporters refusing to be contracted to use their vehicles there.
Councillors sitting in a full council meeting at Buhera Rural District Council (RDC) last week expressed concern at the situation and said that Zimbabwe National Road Authority must be alerted to the situation so that the parastal takes urgent measures to maintain the road.
In addition to problems in the distribution of food aid, the councillors said that villagers  were marginalised in Government development programmes as the areas are difficult to access.
"We have very serious problems of food distribution in Buhera South with transporters refusing to be contracted to deliver food aid there because of the state of Murambinda - Birchenough Bridge Road. Some places are going for three months without receiving food aid and the situation is made worse by the fact that Government policy says if you are skipped on food that’s it, you will have to wait for the next month.
“This has left some villagers with three months food aid deficit and the food situation therefore becomes more and more precarious for such,” said council chair Ngoni Musakaruka.
“No transporter is ready to use his vehicle along that road. Food distribution contracts for Murambinda – Birchenough Bridge Road are being shunned by transporters,” said another councillor
Murambinda –Birchenough Bridge is the second busiest and most important State road in Buhera District after Mutare – Chivhu Highway and it stretches from Marange along Mutare Road.
