The number of farmers who exhibited at the Nharira Agricultural Show jumped by 97% from 76 exhibitions in 2018 to 150 this year and this is despite the economic hardships ravaging the country.
There were 10 companies exhibiting this year compared to four last year.
Chikomba District Agricultural Extension Officer, Gibson Tokotore told The Mirror in an interview that this year’s zonal show held at Nharira Business Centre on Wednesday and Thursday last week was far more successful than the 2018 one and 14 out of the 30 wards in the district managed to attend.
“We had a far bigger show this year than last year as there were 150 exhibitors compared to 76 in 2018. I am also happy that 14 of the district’s 30 wards managed to attend the show and the number of companies that exhibited increased from four last year to 10 in 2019.
“I want to thank Chikomba Rural District Council for supporting us in terms of resources,” said Tokotore.
Some of the wards that participated at the show are Lancashire (Ward 14), Nharira (Ward 16), and Duvhurwi (Ward 19) and Wazvaremhaka (ward 18).
Stanley Nyoka who is the sales agronomist of Seed Co, was present at the show and he gave advice to communal farmers on the best seeds to use.
The show was also attended by acting Chikomba RDC Chief Executive Officer Bulen Chiwara, Chief Musarurwa, the acting district development officer, Michael Mariga and councillors for Ward 19 Bothwell Chapangura, and 14, Richard Mutema.
Paul Bhasikiti was the supervisor of the show. The judges were extension officers from neighbouring Buhera District.
The farmers brought a variety of agricultural produce which included fruits, vegetables and cereals. Others brought handicraft items such as yokes, cooking sticks, clay pots and weaved baskets.
The overall winner of this year’s show is Tinashe Ndoro of Cheater area (Ward 1) who walked away with a plough, knapsack repair kit, Seed Co SC513 maize seed, Agriseeds ZAP 63 maize seed, knapsack sprayer and a dish.
