ZVISHAVANE  – 11-year-old Bradley Machimula from Erymaple Primary school in Zvishavane is the winner of this year’s National Allied Arts Speech and Drama Competitions (poetry category).
The Grade 5 pupil came tops at the national finals that were held at Harare International school in Harare on July 13, 2019. Machimula beat four other contestants who had made it to the finals and he walked away with a trophy.
The National Allied Arts Speech and Drama Competitions are a celebration of art and creativity where children showcase their talents in areas such as speech, drama, poetry and theatre. The competitions are held annually in July and they are organised by Institute of Allied Arts
Erymaple is so excited by the achievement that the school has since offered Bradley a scholarship and he now moves from being a day scholar to a border until he finishes his primary education.
The adjudicators of the national competitions were from California in the United States from America and there were 20 categories where pupils were battling for honours.
Bradley’s winning piece was an African Drum and the judges from California said they will work with the institute to develop talent in children like. In order to go to the nationals, Bradley won the regional competitions that were held at the Midlands Christian College in Gweru in June. In that competition, Bradley beat three other competitors.
Kuzvitonga Mapfumo who is Bradley’s teacher said that he was very pleased with what his pupil has done for the school.
“Dynamite comes in small packages. The boy has done extremely well. As young as he is I never thought he could do better than the pupils from bigger schools such as Midlands Christian College, Hellenics, Heritage and Springvale,” said Mapfumo.
Errymaple Directors Ashely and David Ruswa said they are pleased with Bradley and hence the scholarship.
