Artisanal miner shot dead at Smelly Dube’s mine

SHURUGWI - An artisanal miner Marko Chirozva (26) was shot dead by a security guard working at Tebekwe Mine in Shurugwi which is said to be owned by prominent land mogul Smelly Dube and her husband Mncedisi.
Sources said Chirozva and six other illegal gold miners clandestinely paid security guards US$10 daily each to be allowed to go into the mine and dig for minerals. On the fateful day, Chirozva who was popularly known as Baba Harare allegedly had a quarrel with the guards over payment and this allegedly saw him being shot dead.
The Mirror briefly met Smelly Dube as she drove back from the mine where she had gone to assess the situation after the shooting. She spoke about the negative publicity in The Mirror and quickly left.
Efforts to get a comment from her over the phone were fruitless.
Midlands Police spokesperson Ethel Mukwende said she was still to get a report on the matter when The Mirror called for a comment.
One of the members of the deceased’s group of miners, Kurai Muzeza said they had agreed to pay US$100 to the security guards but the group did not have the money on them when they came out of the mine.
They asked one of the guards to go with them to collect money from their sponsor in Makusha Suburb but this was rejected leading to the shooting.
“We were negotiating to be allowed to go and collect the US$100 when suddenly there was gun sound,” said Muzeza.
The guard accused of shooting the deceased has been identified as Timothy Munhondo (28). #Masvingo Mirror#
