CHIVI- Chivi Rural District Council in the climatic region 5 has embarked on a massive weir construction and rehabilitation program for human and domestic animal consumption, the RDC chairman, Godfrey Mukungunugwa told The Mirror during a tour of ward 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 last Monday.
“We are rehabilitating more than four water bodies and have constructed another weir in Ward 5 Maramba Village which is servicing villagers from Ward 6 as well. The weir was constructed by the villagers while ZINWA assisted with cement and expertise.
“Most of the old weirs in wards 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 1 and 2 have dried up and we are taking advantage of the winter season to rehabilitate them and we hope that by the time the rainy season begins we will be through and this time around they won’t run dry because we have requested Bitumen World which is doing our main link road to assist by scooping the sand from the weirs so that they hold more water,” said Mukungunugwa who was accompanied by villagers and engineers from ZINWA during the tour.

This month will see Maramba, Gudhe, Marufu and Chombwe weirs which are heavily silted and damaged being rehabilitated at a cost of $12 000 without including labour and materials which are locally available, Mukungunugwa told The Mirror.
He said the program will cover the whole district as funds are made available and hope to complete the exercise before the onset of the next rainy season.
