    MASVINGO RURAL –
A man from Ndevo Village under Chief Shumba in Masvingo Rural has been arrested after he defied two successive rulings made against him by Chief Shumba and Masvingo Magistrates’ Court.
Benjamin Mapurisa (28) was ordered by Chief Shumba on February 17, 2019 to pay five beasts and $2 000 as lobola to the father of a woman that he was divorcing. The woman is pregnant and has three other children with Mapurisa, according to evidence given by the State.
It is the State case that Mapurisa snubbed Chief Shumba and slighted his court as too low for him. Chief Shumba went on to give default judgment and ordered Mapurisa to pay $2 000 and 5 beasts as lobola to his father-in-law, Ezra Rwafa.
Mapurisa refused to comply with Chief Shumba’s order and instead appealed to Masvingo Magistrates Court against the ruling. Magistrate Godswill Mavenge reviewed the case and reduced the beasts to four and the $2 000 remained.
It is the State case that Mapurisa blocked a party that comprised of Police officers, the Chief’s aides and Rwafa from collecting the beasts and the matter is now before the courts with Mapurisa facing contempt of court charges.
The State is being represented by Edmund Mapope.
