    SHURUGWI -
Shurugwi Town councillors have resolved to send debt collectors on a door to door campaign to collect RTGS$10 million that the local authority is owed by residents.
The resolution follows advice by the Minister of State for Midlands Larry Mavima who said it was better to collect the money that council is owed by residents than introduce higher rates through supplementary budget.
“It doesn’t make sense to increase rates on the residents who are failing to pay the little they owe council. It is better to maximize council earnings by collecting the debts that are there than increase the tax burden which we all know that residents are not going to pay,” Mavima is quoted as having said.
Council reviewed the ideas and then resolved on a supplementary budget of 100%.
The Finance director Charles Taonezvi announced the Minister’s advice to the councillors.
“There is over RTGS$10m which residents owe Council so the Minister advised that we use strategies to clear up this,” said Taonezvi.
