SHURUGWI – Pompey Mine proprietor Nicholas Gara is a jack of all trades.
Gara who is also the owner of Nichrut Hotel in Shurugwi has won the Best District Farmer Award and this is the third time that he has snatched the prize in a row. Four weeks ago Gara hosted the district field day for the third time since 2017 and farmers turned up to get a leaf from his experience at the field day.
Gara won the district prize again this year after using Seedco’s PGS51 variety. He has used the same variety since 2017 and he has eight hectares under maize and is expecting a bumper harvest with production projected at 10 tonnes per hectare.
The bumper harvest is despite the acute drought experienced in Shurugwi and Gara says his crop survived because he irrigates the crop.
“My core business is not farming per se, I am a miner and I own Hwandara Mine in Shurugwi and a mill. This is where I get the capital which I inject into farming inputs. I started farming when I realised that I need to feed my mine workers who are many. It proved to be cheaper to do so than buying food from the shops.
“We received little rains this year but this did not affect me because I use pumps to irrigate my fields and all crops reached maturity. There is food shortage in our country so we are supposed to utilise the land for the production of food for our people,” said Gara.
Shurugwi district agricultural extension officer expressed satisfaction at the farming activities at Gara’s farm. She said the farm provided an oasis from which the rest of the district can learn.
Gara received a lamp from Shurugwi North MP, Robson Nyathi as a token of appreciation and also got 10 kg seed maize and chemicals to treat maize from Seedco. His wife Rutendo Gara was given US$100 by Robson Nyathi.
