SHURUGWI - The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Mines and Mining Development toured Unki Mine in Shurugwi, one of the biggest producers of platinum in Zimbabwe last week.
The Committee which is chaired by Edmund Mukaratigwa was keen on hearing the benefits that the communities are going to reap from the project during its life which will end in 2042.
There was also talk of the need for Parliament to establish a board of inquiry into the operations of platinum mines in the country and see if there is fair play.
Although mine management told the Committee that the company which is owned by Anglo American built clinics, schools and hospitals, members of the Committee felt strongly that the information that they were getting was not adequate and at one time demanded to see people who are more superior in the company.
The Committee wanted a specific breakdown of how benefits are accruing to the communities.
