MASVINGO – The National Peace and Reconciliation Commission (NPRC) has set up a 30-member provincial peace committee in Masvingo to enhance the resolution of the province’s conflicted past and healing process.
The committee was sworn in last week Monday at Chevron Hotel at a ceremony attended by the Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs, Ezra Chadzamira, Provincial Administrator Fungai Mbetsa, local chiefs and a representative from Vice President Kembo Mohadi’s office.
The eight member NPRC was established in 2018 to promote national healing, peace, and reconciliation in the country and has started setting up committees at provincial level.
NPRC national chairperson, Retired Justice Selo Nare urged committee members to be honesty during the execution of duty.
“This development will see the committee facilitating dialogue on post conflict violence and seeking ways of resolving disputes, responding to issues identified within the province or emanating from the work of the district peace committees and engaging in public education, sensitization and awareness programs about conflict indicators within the province and how to solve them.
“We balanced the committee as we included both genders in electing our deputies whom were voted in by the members, Chiefs, religious leaders, different political parties and different Government departments,” said Nare.
Reverend Themba Siwela of United Methodist Church and Netsai Mushauri were elected as deputy chairpersons.
NPRC Masvingo Provincial Chairperson, Commissioner Dr Golden Chekenyere told committee members to work together to foster healing and reconciliation in the province and said that the committee members should brace for the work ahead and work on the mechanism of resolving past violence acts to ensure healing and reconciliation.
Siwela said peace is not a one step process but to ensure that there is reconciliation the process needs to be fully implemented.
The other committee members include ZRP provincial spokesperson, Chief Inspector Charity Mazula, NANGO Regional Coordinator Moreblessing Manenji, Director in the Minister of State office Kudakwashe Machako.
