    Mirror appoints Traditional Courts Reporter

    MIRROR REPORTER

MASVINGO – The Mirror has reassigned its senior reporter Tatenda Chizu to start a news desk covering traditional courts run by chiefs, headmen and village heads.
Mirror Editor Nkulumani Mlambo said Chizu who recently joined The Mirror as a fulltime journalist becomes the Chiefs’ Courts Reporter.
He called upon all traditional chiefs including village heads, headmen and chiefs to give Chizu access to their courts as a way of enhancing rural coverage and increasing access to information and access to the media by the rural people.
“As a regional newspaper in an area where 80% of the population is rural, we have always been looking at ways of enhancing rural news coverage and one of the strategies that we came up with is to ensure that we adequately cover the traditional courts.
“Traditional courts are a pillar and mirror of rural communities reflecting social problems afflicting the rural people. One cannot adequately cover rural areas without creating a special desk to concentrate on structures as important as the traditional courts,” said Mlambo.
He said that The Mirror which was recently upgraded to a regional newspaper by the Zimbabwe Media Commission is dedicated to fulfil its Constitutional mandate and ensure equitable access to information by all citizens including the rural people.
“In that vein we have been giving 10 complimentary copies of The Mirror to chiefs in Gutu District. We are appealing on the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing and Non-Governmental Organisations with an interest on information and the media to subscribe more newspapers for chiefs throughout the five provinces that we cover as a way of increasing access to information,” said Mlambo.
Chizu’s appointment to the new desk is with effect from July 1, 2019.
