BIKITA- The Methodist Development and Relief Agency (MeDRA) has donated furniture and stationery worth USD$15 000 to Negovanhu Primary School under Chief Negovanhu in Bikita which was severely affected by Cyclone Idai.
The donation by the Methodist-run oganisation was made to a Zion Christian Church-run school.
MeDRA District Programs manager, Junior Vutoyi said the donation was made to Negovanhu because the school head was the first to seek for help and other schools in the same predicament were being supported by organizations like Infrastructure Development Bank of Zimbabwe (IDBZ), Zim Cyclone Fund, Old Students Association and Fenix Trust.
The school received 200 desks, 200 standard chairs, five teachers’ desks, five teachers’ chairs and a swivel chair for the school head and these were officially handed over to the school authorities by MeDRA officials headed by MeDRA National Director, Clever Tabaziba at the school on June 27.
MeDRA also donated 1 530 A4 exercise books, 407 Eversharp ball point pens, 200 A5 exercise books, 536 pencils, 160 rulers and 35 infant school bags.
Also attending the event was Bikita District Development Coordinator, Bernard Hadzirabwi, Bikita District Schools Inspector, James Mahofa, District education officials and school heads and teachers from neighbouring schools.
Speaking during the occasion, Tabaziba said that his organization was also carrying out relief work in Buhera District.
“We are doing relief work in four wards that were affected by Cyclone Idai in Bikita. Our work is mainly aimed at helping children,” said Tabaziba.
Five classes were furnished with 40 desks and 40 chairs from MeDRA. The school head, Sydney Pepukai expressed joy when his state of the art swivel chair was handed over to him.
“Children nowadays are required by the Ministry of Health to sit on proper furniture that include a chair with a back rest and a table not benches. Pupils learn better if their learning environment is comfortable and I want to thank MeDRA for giving us standard furniture,” said Pepukai.
The school has 1 135 pupils and the school head  said that the donations from MeDRA were heaven-sent..
Bikita ward 14 councilor, Howard Masiya expressed his gratitude to the MeDRA team for chipping in to help the school regardless of the fact that these are different church denominations.
“This gesture is amazing where one church donates to a school that is run by another church. The Methodist Church in Zimbabwe has opened a very strong relationship with locals here because of this gesture,” said Masiya.
Mahofa applauded the work done by MeDRA and urged all school heads to have such furniture in their schools.
The Methodist Mission director, Reverend Blessmore Chinhare promised to paint the school blocks.
