GWERU – Former Minister of State for Midlands, Jaison Machaya’s hearing before the Commission of Inquiry into the Sale of State Land in and around urban areas was postponed last week after he asked for time to look for a lawyer.
The hearing which was held in Gweru was rescheduled to tomorrow (Friday 05, July 2019) and the venue moved to Harare Country Club in Harare. Many Gweru residents and other stakeholders who wanted to hear Machaya testify were disappointed by the move.
Machaya told the Justice Tendai Uchena led Commission that he was facing criminal cases involving the same issues and he therefore wanted to bring a lawyer to the hearing so that he would not prejudice his criminal cases.
Machaya was exposed by many witnesses who accused him of violating the law when he allegedly gave himself the powers to allocate land instead of allowing the relevant Government departments to do so.
Machaya also pleaded with the Commission to protect him against the media which he accused of judging him. Justice Uchena said journalists knew their work and in any case his panel was not going to be swayed by what the media says.
“I am already an accused in similar cases or issues that l am required to answer questions to today. I fear that I may say things that are prejudicial to my case if i don’t get a legal representative. My lawyer could not come because he has other cases that he is attending to,” said Machaya.
