Cyclone Idai goods lying idle at Bikita DA’s office

BIKITA- While thousands are languishing in abject poverty in Bikita following the devastating cyclone Idai, bales of goods and groceries have been holed up at the district administrator’s office awaiting distribution to the beneficiaries.
A high ranking official at Bikita Rural District Council who declined to be named for professional reasons told The Mirror that the goods which were donated by various churches and individuals have been lying idle at the DA’s office and some of them have allegedly gone missing.
“Please come down here and see for yourself as the goods are just piled up at the DA’s office while victims of the cyclone are appealing for help and some of the goods are now missing,” said the official.
When contacted for a comment Bikita DA Bernard Hadzirambwi said he was not happy with previous reportage by The Mirror therefore, he could not say anything. However, Bikita South MP, Josiah Sithole told The Mirror that the DA had informed him that there was no fuel to move the goods to affected areas, but the provincial administrator, Fungai Mbetsa said they received fuel last week.
‘We gave the DA enough money to buy 200 liters of fuel last Monday and they also received 300 litres from Christian Care last week. We hope they will start moving the goods this week to the affected families,” said Mbetsa.
Four people were killed, several injured, 550 left homeless and 2106 households several wards including wards 4, 5, 6, 7, 22, 25, 26 were affected by the devastating Cyclone Idai in Bikita in March which also hit parts of Zaka and Gutu.
There have been complaints from the affected families in Chief Marozva’s area that the nation and the international community have been focusing on Chipinge and Chimanimani leaving out Bikita which was also affected.
