    Chiredzi sugarcane farmers get fake offer letters

    CHIREDZI – Various sugarcane farmers in Chiredzi are living on borrowed time with fake offer letters for their plots. Police has unraveled a racket of fake offer letters issued from around 2016.
    Police suspect that there is a smooth syndicate that was giving fake offer letters to unsuspecting farmers. The letters were for plots that are not yet occupied but already taken.
    The syndicate includes suspects from the Ministry of Lands who knew which plots are occupied and which are not.
    Masvingo Provincial Lands Officer Tendai Mumera said the issue was being handled by the Ministry of Lands at head office. She referred The Mirror to head office for comment.
    Director of Resettlement Marius Dzinoreva confirmed that the Ministry was handling such a case. He however said his comment may prejudice Police investigations.
    The Mirror gathered that those offered with fake letters were duped after paying undisclosed amounts and they were offered plots in Hippo Valley and Triangle.
    Police have since launched an investigation and are eager to interview one Sinos Nhomba in relation with the matter.
    Allegations against Nhomba who is also a sugarcane farmer are that he charged $300 for an offer letter of a sugarcane plot and the victims were told to pay various amounts being transport and accommodation during travels to and from Harare. A docket of fraud CR148/05/19 whose reference number is PGHQ Lands 3/04/19 has since been opened at CID Chiredzi and one Tsitsi Machisi of West Road in Chiredzi is the complainant after she claimed that she was duped of various amounts of money by Nhomba. after she overheard him talking to a certain individual in 2016 and then approached him for assistance to get a sugarcane plot.
    Machisi actually grew sugarcane on the plot but was shocked when she supplied her produce to Tongaat Hulett and it was rejected because she was not the rightful owner of the plot.
     “There is an issue similar to that which is being handled by the Ministry but I cannot comment since it is now under Police investigation,” said Dzinoreva.
