MASVINGO –  In what he described as decentralisation and empowerment of local communities, the  Right Reverend Bishop Michael Dixon Bhasera has officially opened the Catholic University of Zimbabwe’s (CUZ) campus in Masvingo.
The opening took place at a well attended function at Sts Peter and Paul Cathedral in Masvingo on Friday and some dignitaries who attended the launch were CUZ Vice Chancellor, Prof Ranga Zinyemba, Catholic Priests, Bondolfi Teachers College staff members and CUZ staff.
The new campus which is  CUZ’s sixth out of the eight expected being one in each diocese of the church will be domiciled at Bondolfi, the only teachers’ college run by the diocese.
Rev Bhasera who is the head of Masvingo Diocese and the Apostolic Administrator of Gweru Diocese said great leaders become great because they empower others. He said by decentralising its services, CUZ was empowering communities and professionals who teach at the campuses. He thanked Prof Zinyemba and his team for coming up with a 10-year strategic plan for spreading the institution’s wings throughout the country.
He applauded the University because its initiatives will contribute towards development and growth strategies to build the nation’s capacity and drive productivity.
“We must all do our part in our areas of responsibility, as we work on building the Zimbabwe we want. St Augustine reminds us that; education is the food of youth, the delight of old age, the ornament of prosperity, the refuge and comfort of adversity, and the provocation to grace in the soul,” said Bishop Bhasera.
He likened the launch of the campus to the upgrading of Bondolfi which has for many years been one of the doyens of the training of primary school teachers in the country to a new and higher level.
The first two programmes that Bondolfi will introduce are Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Development and Bachelor of Education in Primary Education.
Masvingo Diocese Vicar, Fr Walter Nyatsanza who gave the sermon at the official opening said the quest for knowledge has always been there even at the time of Jesus. He said that Pharisees used their knowledge of the law to attack Jesus Christ. However, Jesus on the other hand went beyond the Pharisees and applied wisdom to assist the Pharisees to see the practical application of the law.
“The mission of the Catholic school is the integral formation of students, so that they may be true to their condition as Christ’s disciples and as such work effectively for the evangelization of culture and for the common good of society,” said Fr Nyatsanza quoting the Holy Father Pope John Paul II’s words to the Bishops of the Ecclesiastical Regions of Chicago, Indianapolis, and Milwaukee (USA) in 1998.
