CHIREDZI – There is a crisis at the National Employment Council for the Sugar Industry in Chiredzi where an office dealing with issues of 20 000 workers is manned by just one employee.
Trade unions described this as serious underrepresentation which amounts to poor service and exploitation of workers.
Sugar Production and Milling Workers Union of Zimbabwe (SPMWUZ) General Secretary Adonia Mutero has dispatched a letter to the Registrar  in the Ministry of Labour threatening to take the matter to court if it is not immediately addressed.
Mutero told The Mirror that under normal circumstances such an office must be manned by six workers. NEC receives 1% of each worker’s salary and the mandate of NEC is to help parties settle grievances and provide a platform used for collective bargaining.
“It is shocking that an office which represents over 20000 employees has one employee who is the Secretary General. The NEC is just a talk show between the employer and the other union ZISMIWU where company and union representatives sit at NEC meetings just to get allowances.
“SPMWUZ is not allowed to attend NEC meetings and yet our members are contributing 1% of their salaries to NEC. We are taking the matter to the Ministry,” said Mutero.
Clemence Muparutsa who is the NEC Secretary General confirmed that he is the only employee. He said the issue should be addressed as there is no one to attend to work whenever he is absent.
He said a designated agent who attends to cases during his absence should be employed.
ZISMIWU Secretary General Rt Major Faster Gono said he was in Gweru with Muparutsa when The Mirror called for a comment. He said there was chaos at NEC after the organization was led by a mafia-like group for many years.
