    College of Primary Health Care Physicians attend 45th congress in Masvingo

    MASVINGO – More than 280 m doctors and pharmacists were in Masvingo two weeks ago to attend the College of Primary Health Care Physicians of Zim-babwe and the Pharmaceutical Society of Zimbabwe (PSZ) 45th joint congress.
    The theme of the joint congress was; towards a middle income health service deliver, tackling perennial emerging and re-emerging health challenges in Zimbabwe.
    The joint congress is held annually and its key purpose is to discuss and share information on new developments in the sector including new guidelines of treatment, new drugs, new problems and teach new conditions of the body.
    More than 40 companies involved in the manufacture and supply of medical products and components exhibited during the congress. Some of them are National Aids Council which was led by Munyengetero Masunga, Varichem, Newavakash International, Healthy IT Solutions represented by Sharon Chiweshe, which has just introduced the Dova health information manager for clinics and Em-cure Pharmaceuticals from India.
    The delegates were however, not happy that that the Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr Obadiah Moyo who was the guest of honour did not attend the meeting. They said that most of the issues that they were discussing at the two day congress revolved around Government health policies and the collapsing health system.
    They therefore, said an interface with the Minister would have clarified a lot of issues and taken the agenda forward.
    Some of the hot issues at the workshop were the critical shortages of drugs in the country, foreign currency shortages for pharmacists and medical aid societies that can no longer pay for their members’ bills.
    “The public is contributing to medical aid societies but members are not getting value for their money,” said a pharmacist who could not be named for professional reasons.
    Meanwhile, CPCPZ at the congress elected Dr Lazarus Chitambo as its new president replacing Dr Edward Chagonda, he will be deputized by Dr Mutekwa-Nyadundu, Dr Hellen Karimakwenda was elected secretary and Dr Gwini as committee member.
    The PSZ executive has, Portifa Mwendera as president, vice Gift Chareka, treasurer, Sithembile Ndabiwa, secretary Prosper Maposa and Sithembile Mpofu the immediate past president.
    The 45th congress was organized in Masvingo by Dr Kudzai Masinire and Tapiwa Magarezano of Family Pharmacy.
    Dr Phineas Makurira a senior medical practitioner hailed the two for success-fully organizing and running the workshop.
