CHIREDZI – Members of a 14-member strong Chiredzi Driving Schools’ Association (CDSA) briefly boycotted road tests  on Thursday last week in protest against  Vehicle Inspection Department (VID) instructors who had started demanding bribes in foreign currency.
Charging bribes to learners of driver’s licence has become a norm for all VID depots throughout the country but fixing the bribes in the scarce US$ was taking it a bit too far and the driving schools protested.
The Mirror is reliably informed that booking for tests only resumed after tense discussions between the driving schools and the concerned inspectors.
Three inspectors are said to be the main culprits and they are demanding US$ 250 for one to get a licence.
Chiredzi VID Depot Manager Depot Manager Felix Mudzingaidzwa said he was not aware of the issue since he was out of town last week. He promised to look into the matter before calling back The Mirror.
The protests are however, said to have infuriated the inspectors and the number of candidates who failed the road tests soared on Monday and Tuesday this week.
CDSA Secretary Baldwin Magumbe refused to give a comment over the matter when The Mirror called him for a comment and said they are still making bookings for their students.
Minister of Transport Biggie Matiza said he was in a meeting with the President and promised to call back but his phone was later not reachable.
A driving school instructor who spoke to The Mirror on condition of anonymity said driving schools decided to take action after instructors at VID started to demand bribes in foreign currency.
“The inspectors used to demand RTGS$  but are now demanding US$ and if your client doesn’t pay he or she will certainly fail.
“The schools are contemplating taking up the matter with the Minister of Transport,” said the instuctor.
