    1 killed in the ‘wars for gold’


    MASVINGO - Pinana Manjeni of Chaputika Village under Chief Chivi has appeared at the Masvingo High Court after he allegedly struck and killed a fellow gold panner Elliot Kutsirayi with a machete in March 2017.
    Justice Garainesu Mawadze remanded the case to a later date to allow the State to bring witnesses.
    The victim, Kutsirayi died a few days after the attack.
    It is the State case that in March 2017, Kutsirayi, in the company of Calton Zhou, another artisanal miner at Lennox Mine were approached by Manjeni and an accomplice still at large who demanded their gold ore.
    Zhou and the deceased refused with the ore which angered the latter who then attacked them with machetes, striking them on their heads and arms.
    Zhou and the deceased reported the matter at Mashava Police Station and were admitted at Masvingo Provincial Hospital. The deceased was readmitted at Chivi District Hospital on May 4, 2017 and he died on May 8, 2017.
    A post-mortem carried out by Dr Calton Maimba at Masvingo General Hospital indicated that the death was caused by head injuries.
