    Unki named the best Anglo American Company

    GWERU – One of the biggest platinum producing companies in the country, Shurugwi based Unki Mine has been named the best Anglo American Company in the operations category.
    Unki was awarded the best Operation Excellence amongst the Anglo American family globally.
    Speaking during the official opening of the company’s US$62 million smelter plant in Shurugwi, the mine’s  chairperson,  James Maposa applauded the company’s operations led by the general manager, Walter Nemasasi as witnessed by the scooping of the  internal awards.
    “Unki mine was recently awarded top honours in the operations excellence category of the American Applaud awards.
    “This internal recognition programme celebrates the best of the best in Anglo American globally. This means that Unki Mine is the best from an operational excellence perspective across Anglo American global mining companies. Well done to the GM and his team,” said Maposa
    Unki Mine is the only platinum producer with a smelter in the country which took two years to construct.
    Since 2008 Unki has invested more than US$500 million in the mine and has built a concentrator, employee’s houses and is involved in many other social corporate responsibility programs in and around Shurugwi.
    The mine employs 1137 workers and 1089 contract employees from the Shurugwi community.
    The new smelter is employs 73 people who were trained in South Africa at one of the Anglo American smelters.
