Two concurrent church services at Rujeko AFM as factions fight

    SIMBARASHE MTEMBO

MASVINGO – AFM factions at Rujeko in Masvingo have been running two separate church services in the same building at the same time, documents prepared for the court have indicated.
The elders who are loyal to Amon Madawo would take their chairs and face the back of the building while Pastor Cadwell Mhaka whose congregation  follows Cossam Chiyangwa would occupy the other half of the church and run their own service.
However, Reverend Mhaka was forced to withdraw his case against the elders last week when he appealed to Masvingo Magistrates Courts for a peace order against the latter.
The matter was struck off the register after it was noted that Mhaka had cited himself as Rujeko AFM Assembly which does not have a legal persona outside the main church.
The cited elders, through their attorney, Grace Bwanya of Chihambakwe Law Chambers refuted all allegations that Mhaka made against them and challenged his legality as a pastor after his suspension by the church’s provincial committee on October 26, 2018.
Mhaka who was represented by his counsel from Mugiya Macharaga Law Chambers cited Christopher Mverecha, Isau Nyengera, David Mandiudza, ManashVunganai, Allan Mhike and Tsungirirai Chamboko as the respondents.
Mhaka argued in his papers that the elders were manipulating congregants into having a service parallel to his. He said he uses the right wing to conduct his sermon and the elders would run a parallel service using the left.
“The respondents are claiming that although they left our church, they still have rights to disturb and upset the preaching of the word of God, they have taken instruments and are holding parallel services in the same block as us while using a different wing,” reads part of the application filed on April 5, 2019 at Masvingo Magistrate Courts.
