MASVINGO - A successful small grains field day was held at Austen Ratsauka’s homestead in Mucharaga Village Ward 19 where farmers were urged to take agriculture as a business.
Over 300 people came to support the field day event.
Before speeches from representatives from each company, people were led by the master of ceremony to Ratsauka’s fields to see the Finger millet field. There were two hectares of Finger Millet and a bumper harvest is expected from that field. The expected harvest from the field is 2-3 tones per hectare. The expected yield from Ratsauka’s two hectares field is six tones.
Ratsauka planted 40kgs of Finger millet variety FMV1 that he got from Matopo’s crop breeding institute to plant his two hectare field.
Speaking during the small grains field day programme,Agriculture assistant for Matopo’s Crop Breeding Institute , Raymond Mashinya said ,’’We urged many farmers in the semi-arid regions to grow crops or small grains that need less rain, that’s why we gave Ratsauka FMV1 seed because it can survive under low rainfall that is received in Mapanzure. There are varieties of treated seeds that are found at our institute which include maize, beans and all small grains like wheat , sorghum and finger millet.
