Mwenezi teacher ‘fight’ wife in court over maintenance

MWENEZI - Mwenezi Resident Magistrate Honesty Musiiwa recently ordered a teacher from Batanai Secondary School in Mwenezi to pay $280 for the maintenance of his two children after his wife dragged him to court.
Lavender Murwira (28) said that she had this time decided not to leave her children after deserting the matrimonial home thrice before and going back to her parents. She only came back to her children after the husband followed her with the promise of better behavior.
Murwira described Joseph Vafi as a drunkard and an irresponsible father who is not taking care of the children.
Vafi changed his excuses for not looking after his children several times after Murwira pinned him down.
Vafi initially said he did not have enough money to look after his children because he was looking after his late sister’s children. He then changed his statement and said he was looking after his parents and then Murwira pulled out the husband’s payslip from her braa and showed the magistrate that there were no deductions of any nature from her husband’s salary.
He then said he was not looking after his children because he was saving money to pay the bride prize for his wife but this was again quashed.
“I am tired of packing bags and this time I have decided not to psychologically torment my children by leaving them alone. I want my husband to maintain our children while we stay together,” said Murwira.
