Zanu PF and MDC members drowned each other’s voices during the maiden meeting of the National Peace and Reconciliation Commission (NPRC) in Masvingo held at the Chevron Hotel on Tuesday last week.
The NPRC meeting was intended to introduce the Commission and its objectives to the people of Masvingo Province and over 200 people from political parties, civic society, Government and the general public attended the meeting.
Former MDC MP for Masvingo Central, Jeffryson Chitando was one of the first to speak and he told the gathering that he had all names of people who were maimed or killed by Zanu PF in the last six elections. He said he personally suffered the effects of violence perpetrated by Zanu PF when his house was bombed.
Chitando could however, not finish his speech as his voice was drowned by Zanu PF members who booed him.
A Zanu PF member only identified as Sengerayi implored the Commission to start its peace and reconciliation work from the pre-colonial times and in particular with Matebele raids on the Shonas where they robbed the latter of their cattle and beautiful women.
Sengerayi said this was important for full reconciliation.
He was however, booed by MDC activists who were in the meeting.
The outreach team was led by the NPRC chairman Retired Justice Selo Masole Nare who implored participants to be tolerant of each other’s views and to work hand in glove with the Commission in order to achieve the set out goals.
“We have come down here to allow you to have an appreciation of how we operate and to that effect we require your maximum support as we can’t operate in isolation,” said Justice Nare in his opening remarks.
The Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs, Ezra Chadzamira who attended the meeting paid tribute to the new dispensation for allowing victims and those affected by violence and wars to discuss their issues openly in order to bring them to closure in a peaceful way.
“Let us be strong and connected to each other and learn to solve our problems from the family unit to national level in a peaceful manner. It is easier to solve our problems amongst ourselves than for someone to do it on our behalf. ‘Peace begins with me, peace begins with you and peace begins with all of us’ said the late VP John Nkomo,” echoed Chadzamira as he welcomed the guests.
The NPRC is an independent Constitutional body put in place in accordance with Section 252 of the supreme law and was operationalised by an Act of Parliament gazetted on January 5 2018 followed by the appointment of Justice Nare as the chairman in February of the same year.
Netty Musanhu one of the commissioners told the gathering that the Commission had set up national thematic committees which are, complaints handling and investigations, victims support and gender diversity, healing rehabilitation and reconciliation and research and knowledge management.
She said the committees will be decentralized to provinces and districts in order for people to fully participate in the process which will promote post conflict justice, national healing, reconciliation, facilitate truth telling, rehabilitation and conflict prevention.
The meeting was also attended by NPRC deputy chair, Lilian Chigwedere, Commissioner Leslie Ncube, NPRC communications manager, Philmon Chereni and Chivi RDC chairman, Godfrey Huruva among others.
