Honey harvesting boy (13) killed in Gutu

GUTU – A 13-year-old boy from Mutombwa Primary School under Chief Munyikwa in Gutu has died after a tree branch that his brother had cut fell on him while they were trying to harvest honey at night.
Relatives believe that Eliot Mangezi who was doing Grade 7 was hit by the tree branch and died.
A post-mortem says Eliot bled profusely and this damaged his brain thereby causing his death.
“Only God knows how he died because only his two young siblings were there when this happened,” said the Kumurai Musakaruka an uncle to the deceased.
Eliot was buried at Zvavarundwi Village on Sunday. His parents said that the news came as a shock to them since they did not allow them to go and extract the honey during the night.
“We spend the whole day together, we had supper and we went to sleep but we did not know that our children sneaked out  at 10pm and went to extract honey,” said Musakaruka.
Villagers said that when the children noticed that their brother was injured they carried him and he died on their way home.
Eliot’s siblings who were afraid to break the news to their parents went and told a neighbour.
