    Gov release $6m for Chingwizi victims

    MWENEZI – The Ministry of Local Government, Public works and National Housing has received an RTGS$5 906 400 grant for the compensation of hundreds of families who were displaced from their homes by the construction of Tokwe Mukosi Dam.
    Masvingo Provincial Administrator (PA) Fungai Mbetsa confirmed the development in an interview with The Mirror on Wednesday.
    Government compensated the displaced families for the developments on their properties but the money ran out before some could receive what was due to them.
    “I can confirm that l have received the remaining balance in our account. We are appealing to the beneficiaries to come to our offices to verify their names and bank details so that we can disburse their allocations.
    “Starting next week our team will visit Chingwizi to meet the beneficiaries and evaluations will be made interms of the number of properties each lost. We gave them 20% at first and we are giving them the remainder as soon as we finish the exercise,” said Mbetsa.
    The displaced families were settled in tents at Chingwizi and they suffered all the vagaries of the weather while they awaited to be allocated new pieces of land to build their new homes.
    The most affected families were from Chivi District
    An estimated 2,194 households were moved to Chingwizi resettlement camp in February 2014 and an estimated 15,625 people were living at the settlement.
