    First Lady hails role of midwives

    MASVINGO –
    The First Lady,  Auxillia Mnangagwa has hailed the role played by midwives despite the difficult working environment in the health sector characterised by shortage of medicine and equipment.
    The First Lady who is also the Ministry of Health and Child Care Ambassador was the guest of honour at the belated annual Midwife celebrations held at Masvingo Provincial Hospital last week on Friday.
    Midwife Day is celebrated throughout the world on May 5 in recognition of the role midwives play by ensuring safe deliveries.
    Mnangagwa highlighted that the country celebrate midwives for their outstanding work in standing up for the rights of women to receive respectful maternity care.
     ‘’ l am well aware of the challenges that midwives face owing to shortage of human and material resources. Our country is working tirelessly to overcome the economic challenges that have for a long time continued to rob us of our dream of a prosperous nation. The Government is committed on improveing the health delivery system in the country and that every women, adolescent and midwife enjoy their full human and professional rights, ‘’ said the First Lady.
    She also urged the nation and Government to recognise the role of the midwife which today is a specialised skill carried out by the nurses. Their role is as crucial as it was in the ancient days.
    The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) country Director, Dr Esther Muei who was at the celebrations bemoaned the high mortality rate in the country where 651 women out of 100 000 die while giving birth.
    ‘’ There are 100 000 live births and there are 651 women dying and this translates to 9 women dying on daily bases, ‘’ said Muei.
    The President of the Zimbabwe Confederation of Midwives, Emmanuel Mahlangu who was at the celebrations said their services are only appreciated when they are not available yet they play a very crucial role in the health sector.
    The Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs, Ezra Chadzamira, provincial medical director, Dr Amadeus Shamu, Masvingo Provincial Hospital. Medical  Supritendent Dr Julius Chirengwa and many other senior Government officials from the Province also attended the annual celebrations.
    On the same day members of the Zion Christian Church donated groceries for the victims of the devastating Cyclone Idai to the First Lady.
