ZVISHAVANE - Chengeto Chikwayi(67) of Koodvale farm under Chief Maziofa is expecting to harvest 15 tonnes of maize on his one hectare farm this season in the arid district of Mberengwa which falls under region 4.
Chikwayi managed the feat after using Klein Karoo Seed Company’s PGS51 variety for the second time.
This came out during the field day that was held at Chikwayi’s homestead where tens of farmers converged to witness his mature crop.
"While others are struggling to get a bucket of maize in this dry region of Mberengwa, the Almighty has blessed me with this big harvest. I also want to thank Klein Karoo for their seeds which are drought resistant because they have worked well for me. Although the rains came late in January we managed to harvest because of the good variety we planted,” said an elated Chikwayi.
Jorum Nhunha who is the Midlands Province agronomist for Klein Karoo (K2) said that he was proud of Chikwayi’s achievement as it shows that their efforts to feed the nation are yielding positive results through drought resistant varieties.
Chikwayi also said that he was expecting more than 10x50kgs of cowpeas from his other field.
He told The Mirror that he puts maximum effort on farming as it has always been his way of life since 2001 and all his children have gone to school using proceeds from farming.
Stephen Zhou a supervisor for farmers from the area said that was impressed by the diversity of crops at Chikwayi's farm where he grew sunflower, cowpeas and maize. He added that under region 4 and 5 farmers should grow small grains as security against hunger.
