    ZAKA –
The Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affiars, Ezra Chadzmira has officially opened Chemvuu Dam in Ward 14, Chief Nhema’s area in Zaka constructed at a total cost of US$20 000.
The dam which has a capacity of 44, 000 cubic metres was built courtesy of support from CARE under the Enhancing Nutrition Stepping Up Resilience (ENSURE) and USAID which provided financial resources.
The Government provided both human resources and technical backstopping to the project. The objective of the dam is to provide irrigation water to Chinyambako households and improve food security to communities in the area.
Hundreds of people gathered at the opening and also attending the function were officials from DDF, Agritex, SEED-CO, Health and Masvingo DA, Roy Hove.
Chadzamira said that the project is one of those that Government will use in its drive to achieve a middle income economy by 2030 under the stewardship of President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
“The developments we are witnessing today are a result of good corporate governance under the stewardship of President Mnangagwa who wants to see Zimbabwe being a middle income economy by 2030. This comes through engagement and re-engagement with other countries. Agricultural productivity is one of the President’s major visions of seeing Zimbabwe being a middle income economy by 2030,” said Chadzamira.
The ENSURE project has so far established 22 small dams to promote irrigation of a total of 40 hectares in Bikita, Chivi and Zaka districts. The project also supported the rehabilitation of existing irrigation across the three districts whose combined irrigated area is in excess of 250 hectares.
ENSURE also worked to improve nutrition among women of reproductive age and children under the age of five. Bikita and Chivi Districts will have similar ceremonies on April 24 and 25 at Chamanhokwe  Dam and Garden (Ward 1), Jorodhani Dam and garden (ward 26).
“I urge farmers to shift to modern agricultural practices to conserve water for example drip irrigation”, said Chadzamira.
