Business snubs Tongogara RDC supplementary budget meeting

TONGOGARA – A meeting to discuss the 2019 supplementary budget for Tongogara Rural District Council (RDC) had to be abandoned on Monday after residents and the business community snubbed the event.
Six businessmen and four council employees turned up for the meeting where hundreds were expected and the indaba could not proceed. This is the second time that the meeting had been abandoned after the first scheduled meeting on May 13, 2019.
The meeting was called by CEO Brian Rufasha to review the 2019 budget following the fall of the RTGS from 1:1 with the US$ to 1:3 which has seen prices of almost all commodities trebling in the last few months.
Chachacha Business Community chairman, Loyalty Mabhonga who did not attend the meeting said his members were not attending the meeting because they were not consulted in the first place when the first budget was drafted and approved.
“Where are we supplementing from if we did not meet for the first budget consultation in December? We cannot meet for a supplementary budget,” said Mabhonga.
Council CEO said they are going to arrange another meeting as they felt the business community could not attend because of other pressing commitments.
Another local businessman StandrickNyevera also reiterated his chairman’s sentiments that he could not be bothered with a supplementary budget when he was not involved with the main budget. He accused the local council of poor communication with stakeholders.
“The council has poor communication with stakeholders and this is the reason why the business community is not responding to these meetings,” said Nyevera.
