    Apology to Engineer Mukome

In our issue of April 18 – 24 2019, we erroneously stated that Engineer Peter Robert Mukome was responsible for the 1970 design of a proposed Chilonga Bridge in Chiredzi.
This was a subbing error that left facts mixed up. Engineer Mukome is actually the current provincial engineer for Masvingo and was nowhere near the ministry of Transport in 1970.
We apologise to Engineer Mukome for any inconveniences caused.
We are also told that our headline for the same story which read; Government abandons US$20m Chilonga Bridge plan may be misconstrued by  some readers to mean that Government has abandoned construction of the bridge.
Gov has not stopped the project; what it has abandoned is the 1970 design which is based on an expensive pile foundation in favour of a new design that will be based on concrete. The pile foundation requires a lot of material to be imported thereby pushing the construction bill up. The alternative design will use a lot of locally available materials.
