All Buhera school toilets to be fixed by this week - Minister

    Professor Paul Mavima

BUHERA – The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Professor Paul Mavima has said that the biggest problem that could force some schools in Buhera no to open for the second term are the toilets that were destroyed by Cylone Idai.
He said in order to avert that, Government was working round the clock to ensure that destroyed toilets at every school are repaired before the opening day this week.
He also said that for classroom blocks that were destroyed and not repaired in time for opening, Government will provide tents for temporary accomodation.
Mavima said this during a tour of schools in Buhera that were damaged by the cyclone.
“We are taking the reconstruction of schools seriously as Government. Toilets repairs should be completed before opening and all schools should be opened on the same day. Right now the focus is on toilets and then after schools are opened we will focus on the issue of uniforms, stationery, books and other things,” said Mavima.
He called on all partners assisting Government with reconstruction of schools to help so that the learning system is back on track.
He also asked Buhera District Schools Inspector, Godfrey Chimbwanda to look for temporary shelter for teachers whose accommodation is no longer habitable. Mavima condemned many schools for the poor accommodation of teachers.
Some of the schools visited by the Minister are Mavangwe Primary and Secondary, St Albans Primary and Secondary, Masocha Primary and Secondary and Chipodzana Primary.
Chimbwanda told Mavima that there are 19 schools in Buhera with serious toilet damages that need total reconstruction.
Of the 19 schools, 10 of them were allocated to Later Day Saints.
In Buhera North there is Masocha Secondary, Mavangwe Primary, Chirasauta Primary, Chipodzana Primary, Moses the Prophet Primary and Ndawana Primary. In Buhera West there is Matsveru Primary and Bere Primary. In Buhera Central there is only Zvomwoyo Secondary and in Buhera South there is Nechikova Secondary school.
Of the other nine schools, seven were allocated to Buhera Public Works Department. The schools are Chiturike Primary, Ngombeyarara Primary, Kandenga Primary, Mupeza Primary, Changamire Primary, Gotora Secondary and Murove Primary.
St Albans primary school’s classroom blocks were all condemned by the Minister and there is need for reconstructing all of them. It will be provided with tents for learning purposes until construction is complete. Oil Company of Zimbabwe has volunteered to reconstruct both the toilets and the blocks damaged by Cyclone Idai at St Albans and the school will be provided with tents for learning.
Accompanying Mavima was acting Manicaland Provincial Education Di-rector, Charles Muganhu, Schools Infrastructure Education Officer M Muranda, Buhera North MP, William Mutomba and the District Civil Protection Unit led by DA Freeman Mavhiza.
