Trainee nurses programme: fraudster jailed 3 months

MASVINGO – A man from Mhike Village under Chief Zimuto has been sentenced to three months in jail or to pay $100 fine after he tried to swindle a woman who was looking for a place to train as a nurse.
Regis Svondo (44) appeared before magistrate Rufaro Mangwiro last week. He wanted Mary Chidhakwa of Mucheke D to pay $350 to him through EcoCash so that he could facilitate for the former’s daughter to get a place to train as a nurse at Mashoko Mission Hospital  in Bikita.
The State represented by Fortune Mukede said on April 1, 2019, Svondo posted banners around the city of Masvingo on which he advertised nursing places. The adverts advised interested candidates to contact Svondo through his EcoCash number.
Chidhakwa got interested in the advert and started communicating with Svondo with a view to getting a place for her daughter.
On April 4, 2019 at Kubatana Centre, Masvingo Svondo misrepresented to Chidhakwa that he was Meluleki Tshabangu the nursing tutor at Mashoko Mission Hospital. He said that there was a nursing recruitment exercise for May 2019 and he told Chidhakwa to pay $315 for him to facilitate a place for her daughter
It emerged in court that Svondo was not even employed.
He said he was going to surrender the bribe to the tutor in Charge at Mashoko Hospital and advised Chidhakwa to pay through EcoCash but Chidhakwa refused to pay and asked for a face to face meeting.
Svondo was arrested on April and was finned.
