    Suspected assassin poisons Zimra supervisor to death


    BEITBRIDGE – Charles Mwarira a supervisor with Zimra and his brother have died in Beitbridge after a suspected assassin broke into their house and laced food that was in the refrigerator with poison.
    The case has sent cold chills down the spines of many employees at the country’s revenue authority.
    Beitbridge Anglican Father Fungai Nyandoro confirmed the incident but told The Mirror that he was not at liberty to give further details except that the burial of Mwarira was due yesterday in Harare. However, sources said the Anglican where Mawarira attended church initially issued a statement but withdrew it allegedly under pressure.
    Zimra spokesperson Francis Chimanda was not picking up his mobile phone until the time of going to print.
    Mwarira is said to have investigated a case of smuggling last year which resulted in some workers at Zimra implicated fired. Sources at the authority said that Mawarira was not investigating any case currently contrary to widespread speculation.
    According to sources the assassin broke into the house on Thursday last week and laced the food with the poison before escaping unnoticed.
    Mwarira and his brother are understood to have consumed the food on Thursday and they were taken to Dr Samhere’s surgery on. Mwarira’s condition deteriorated on Saturday and he was transferred to Harare where he died on Sunday.
    The Officer Commanding Beitbridge District (Dispol), Chief Superintendent Tichaona Nyongo could neither confirm nor deny the death.
    “We received a Whatsapp message that has been circulating about the death of Mwarira which states that it was authored by his church members. We are still investigating the authenticity of the message,” he said.
