CHIREDZI - The Shangaan people through Chief Tshovani have threatened to kick out all Shona teachers from their schools arguing that they cannot teach their children if they don’t speak the local language.
The threat was issued by Jerry Masiya who was representing Chief Tshovani at a Chiredzi stakeholders meeting attended by the Minister of State for Masvingo Ezra Chadzamira last week on Friday.
Masiya said it was wrong for Government to continue deploying Shona speaking teachers in their region and worse still if they are going to be teaching infants. Shangani is the dominant language in Chiredzi South and East
"Government continues with a system that negatively affects our children by deploying non Shangaan speaking teachers to teach our kids from ECD level. This is a worrisome trend and we will take the law into our hands of this is not addressed. We will physically expel those teachers from our stations.
“We have a program with various colleges which saw our people going for training but they are still unemployed while Karanga speaking teachers who are unable to speak even a single Shangaan word are deployed to our schools. Government should urgently look into the matter" said Masiya.
In response Chadzamira said Public Service Commission should place teachers in areas where they fit culturally and linguistically.
Provincial Public Service Manager Tauya Makuza said government have a policy to deploy its employees to areas where they can communicate without any barrier and promised to look into the issue.
Member of Parliament for Chiredzi South Rt Gen Kallisto Gwanetsa said Shangaan is a language recognised by the constitution of Zimbabwe hence there is need for government to consider it for teaching in areas where it is dominant. He said his constituency is a cosmopolitan area where 80% is Shangaan, 10% Karanga and 10% Ndebele so the language should be treated fairly.
