    Juniors shine at ZPCS golf tourney

    MASVINGO- Five junior golfers who participated at the third edition of the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS), Commissioner General’s Goodwill Trust Fund golf tournament surprised many by their polished performance.
    The five, Jerry Mudzikisi, Cephas Ngwenya Jnr, Modestar Masiya, Nyasha Dziore and Miriam Masiya made it into the top 10 of the FBC Bank sponsored tournament for ZPCS charity at Masvingo Golf Club last Sunday.
    The one day golf tourney was played under Four Ball Better Ball attracted a record 77 players since the tournament was spread to all the ZPCS administrative provinces three years ago.
    The juniors played 18 holes the same as the senior players and this will boost their chances at the forthcoming U19 national tournament to be held at Hillside Golf Club in Mutare from April 24 to 26 where they will play 36 holes a day, said their coach Richard Masiya.
    Cephas Jnr played 9 handicap and his partner G…Chipunza 24 to make it 43 points on number seven overally.
    Modestar (14) who is doing form 2 at Vicoria High played 14 handicap while her partner Miriam doing grade 4 at St Don Bosco who participated for the first time played 36 handicap and were tied on eighth position with Dziore and Jerry Mudzikisi.
    Modestar and Mirriam were sponsored by FBC Bank and they also received satchels and caps from the institution as part of their prizes.
    “We want to promote the girl child to play golf as well and to ensure that the sport does not die with the old generation hence the sponsorship of the juniors,” said Dr Abson Zvobgo the FBC Masvingo branch manager, a keen golfer himself.
    Meanwhile, Jadecon team of Sternly Kondongwe and Raymond Chiwara came out tops after garnering 49 points playing 18 and 14 hadicap respectively and this is the second time on the bounce that they have won the ZPCS charity tourney.
    On second position was Boston Hwizimani and G…Peters with 46 points followed by Cephas Ngwenya and Thomas Mbetu the green keeper with 45 points.
    Most golf went to Nyambiko and Mukwena who amassed 16 points, Hwizimani and Stella Feldman had the longest drive while nearest pins were Brian Mbaraja, Bauti, Nzowore and January.
    Deputy Commissioner General Moses Chihobvu who was the guest of honour paid tribute to Masvingo golfers and companies that donated towards the fund which has helped hundreds of children left behind by their parents and guardians who died in the line of duty for ZPCS.
    “Since its inception in 2011, 325 students have benefited whilst for the year 2018 167, 80 primary and 87 secondary pupils have had their tuition fees paid.
    “The fund also catered for the examination fees of 33 students, 29 O Level and four A Level,” DCG Chihobvu said.
    Officer Commanding Masvingo Province, Senior Assistant Commissioner Social Ndanga was also pleased with the turnout and thanked the players for their support.
    “You have over the years consistently responded to our invitations and I am pleased to advise that even the number of participants has been growing. I can only hope that this engagement towards charity will continue getting even better in the years to come,” said SAC Ndanga.
