SHURUGWI – Deaths involving machete attacks have become common in mining towns in Zimbabwe and Shurugwi is no exception.
A woman vendor who was just a bystander was allegedly killed by a machete wielding patron at Mzansi Nightclub, according to a case that came into court on March 9, 2019.
Benjamin Chipapata (26) from Gazibi Village under Chief Ngezi in Chegutu allegedly attacked and killed Judith Ruzive who was selling boiled eggs at the night club.
Two other people attacked by Chipapata; Patson Bhenga and Chido Makanda are admitted at Gweru Provincial Hospital where their conditions are said to be critical and are both unable to speak.
The incident happened last Friday night.
The State says at around 230am Chipapata had a misunderstanding with Patson Bhenga. Bhenga then left him at the veranda and entered the night club. Chipapata then approached Judith Ruzive with the intention of buying polony and the former accidentally dropped his beer bottle. Several patrons shouted at Chipapata and one of them took the broken beer bottle and stabbed him on the chest.
Chipapata pulled out a machete from his trousers and began to look for the man who had stabbed him but could not find him. That is when he ran amok and attacked the deceased and several other people.
Chipapata appeared before Gweru magistrate’s court and was remanded to march 22, 2019.
