    NASH selects 120-strong provincial team

    The cream of Masvingo’s athletes converged at Mukaro High School in Gutu on Friday last week where inter-district competitions were held with the ultimate goal of selecting the team that will represent the province at national competitions to be held at the Midlands Christian College in Gweru from March 26 to 28, 2019.
    These were the best athletes from Masvingo’s secondary schools competing under the banner of the National Association of Secondary School Heads inter districts.
    NASH Provincial chairman, Cuthbert Chuma said Masvingo is ready to upset other provinces with the team that it assembled on Friday. Last year Masvingo came second in the national competitions.
    The Masvingo team will be camped at Vic High on March 17, 2019 in preparation for the national competitions.
    Some 780 athletes from eight districts competed for honours at the competitions. The districts are Zaka, Mwenezi, Bikita, Chivi, Masvingo, Chiredzi and Gutu North and Gutu South. Gutu was split into two districts.
    Technical arrangements for the day, which is one of the biggest sports events in the province were done on Thursday and the competitions were held the whole day on Friday.
    Bikita came first in the competitions after scooping 31 gold medals in the competitions described by Chuma as tight. Bikita also bagged 10 silver medals and 7 bronze medals.
    Chiredzi District hauled 18 gold medals, 14 silver medals, 5 bronze and it claimed the second position.
    Mwenezi was third with 14 gold medals, 13 silver medals and 14 bronze. On number 4 was Masvingo District with 11 gold medals, 10 silver and 12 bronze medals.
    Chivi came 5th with 9 gold medals, 16 and 12 bronze medals. Gutu North district was on 6th position with 4 gold, 12 silver medals and 12 bronze and Gutu South came 7th with 4 gold medals, 9 silver and 18 bronze.
    Zaka anchored the group with 3 gold medals, 10 silver medals and 7 bronze medals.
    “The competition was tough but I managed to get a gold medal, 2 silver medals and a bronze medal and proceed to the national level competition” said Tinotenda Toendepi (17) from Chidzikwe Secondary who collected four medals.
    The districts marched in their respective tracksuits at the beginning of the event and they shouted their slogans with Gutu South’s slogan being; to host is to win.
    Brave Maguchu from Dewure High who won a gold medal in the 100m said his aim was to represent Zimbabwe at the COSAFA competitions in Swaziland.
    Miriam Madaraunga of Mukove Secondary School in Bikita bettered the javelin throw by 2m from 63m in 2018 to 65m this year.
