MASVINGO – The merger of Masvingo United and Masvingo Pirates to form one outfit has been hailed by supporters, analysts and members of the business community as the first step towards claiming a spot in the top flight league.
Analysts, supporters and members of the business community are agreed that the merger of the former Premiership outfit and Pirates to Masvingo Utd will end the 4 year absence of a team from the ancient city in the Premiership.
The new Masvingo United outfit was announced by the new chairman and former Masvingo Mayor, Hubert Fidze during a Press briefing held at the Civic Centre last Tuesday.
“Masvingo United Football Club and Masvingo Pirates Football Club have seen it fit to merge and form one strong club. The new club will use the name Masvingo United Football Club,” said Fidze.
Masvingo Mayor and Masvingo United patron, Colleen Maboke applauded the move saying it increases the City’s chance of rejoining top flight football and urged members of the business community to come to the aid of the club.
Masvingo Urban Constituency legislature, Jacob Nyokanhete applauded the move and called for professionalism and discipline from the players, technical team and the executive.
Long time Una Una fan, Tauya Cheru said the merger is a positive step in unifying the people of Masvingo who were divided over Una Una and Pirates.
“This will unify Masvingo, I did not know which team to support and the City was torn between the two teams. We are rallying behind Masvingo United to reclaim glory for our City which has not featured in PSL for years,” said Cheru.
The newly formed outfit is headed by a 12 member interim executive committee chaired by Fidze, Father Raymond Mahefu  vice chairperson, secretary general is, Omen  Mafa, secretary is Foroma Chakabuda, vice secretary, Simbarashe Mandishona, treasurer, Johannes  Ruvengo, public relations, Godfrey Mutimba.
The Club’s chief Executive officer (CEO) is Phillip Shumba, Taurai Mudzviti (Bucho) is the former players representative while Andrew Chekani and Angelina Mikiri are committee members.
Fidze added that the club is to complete its constitution by February 28, recruitment of substantive coach and his technical team by March 4, identification and registration of players by March 13, 2019.
“The club has since invited applications from qualified coaches to be submitted to the executive and interviews shall be carried on March, 2, 2019. With the support of Masvingo community, our club will achieve its objective and I therefore call upon the people of Masvingo to support this nobble project,” added Fidze.
Masvingo Una Una and Pirates have been struggling financially and have failed to conquer Eastern Region Division 1 with both teams finishing on position six  and 18 respectively last season.
