    GZU lecturer sues violent soldier for $50 000


    MASVINGO- A soldier with the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA), who assaulted and broke Munyaradzi Phiri’s jaw on November 16, 2017 has been slapped with a $50 000 lawsuit.
    Phiri is a lecturer at the Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) and the incident happened on November 16 2017 soon after the coup which brought President Emmerson Mnangagwa to power.
    Chagwiza broke Phiri’s jaw with an unknown object and left him unconscious.
    Chagwiza was convicted by former Masvingo Magistrate, Peter Madiba but only fined $400 in January 2018 for the heinous act.
    Phiri is claiming $50 000 for the humiliation that he suffered as a university lecturer, the injuries sustained which he is still undergoing treatment and the defendant assaulted him for no apparent reason.
    “Plaintiff is a lecturer at GZU, the message of the assault reached to the Plaintiff’s employer, fellow lecturers, students, friends, relatives and Plaintiff’s wife. Plaintiff is now a social misfit.
    “Defendant is a soldier whose duty is to protect the country and its citizens. On this day in question Defendant deliberately ignored his duties and did the opposite,” reads part of the affidavit by Phiri filed at the High Court by his legal counsel, Collen Maboke of Ruvengo Maboke Legal Practitioners.
