    Gumbi, Matutu war divides Masvingo

     Nelson Chamisa

    MIRROR REPORTER

    MASVINGO –
MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa is coming for a provincial meeting in Masvingo when a tricky fight between James Gumbi and Tongai Matutu has unsettled the party.
Gumbi is the current chairman and Matutu is ready to challenge him in elections that are coming up in the next few weeks.
Gumbi boasts of his loyalty to party icon, Morgan Tsvangirai and standing by him through thick and thin. He also boasts that he is one of those who remained with Tsvangirai hence he contributed to  the survival of the party.
Matutu’s supporters are accusing Gumbi of imposing candidates and thereby destroying the party ahead of the 2018 elections. They also accuse him of failing to unite the party and hence the party got just one seat last year.
They hail Matutu as a man who will be able to mobilise people for the party and some are saying that he has the interests of the people at heart. Others even label Gumbi a sellout for relinquishing his position in 2018 and they claim that his interests are more in Harare than in Masvingo.
While Matutu seems to have the people for now, Gumbi controls the party machinery.
Matutu has a strong backing of all former MPs who left the MDC during the time of Tsvangirai.
