Chikomba RDC proposes to buy cars for councillors

CHIVHU - Tensions were high between Zanu PF and MDC Alliance councillors on Tuesday last week after a proposal to buy cars for the councillors divided the house.
Zanu PF councillors proposed for a scheme to buy motor bikes or cars for councillors which was shot down by MDC Alliance councillors.
Chairperson of the Human Resources Committee and Ward 20 Councillor Givemore Chisvore recommended that the council buy motor bikes or vehicles for councillors.
The committee also recommended that council be a guarantor for a vehicle scheme for councillors if it fails to buy the cars itself.
MDC Alliance Ward 12 councillor, Ishamel Maukazuva however said service delivery was the first priority ahead of such a car scheme adding that there were far more important issues for council to pursue than the cars.
Zanu PF councillors made several interjections during Maukazuva’s contributions, accusing him of plotting to hinder an opportunity for them to own motor vehicles or bikes.
“It is not really worthy for councillors to drive a new car or a motorbike when there are no bins or proper sanitation facilities. Rate payers will certainly not be happy to see their hard-earned cash being spent that way,” said Maukazuva.
Chikomba RDC chief executive officer Bullen Chiwara however said there were some wards, mostly rural wards, which have a very big catchment area hence the councillors’ need for transport.
“The issue of purchasing motor bikes or vehicles for councillors is not a free offer. If council buys vehicles for the councillors, they will pay back through monthly deductions on their monthly earnings,” said Chiwara.
Chikomba RDC has 30 wards and 24 of the wards are rural which have Zanu PF councillors. Five of the wards are urban which are under MDC Alliance councillors.
