BUHERA – A huge baboon population has invaded parts of Buhera where it is attacking women, children; raiding fowl runs and killing chicken, peacocks and small goats for food.
The broad daylight robberies are alarming in the Ndongwe area under Chief Nyashanu. People who spoke to The Mirror said that there is a definite upsurge in the population of baboons in the area.
Villagers have called upon Government to intervene and the matter is now with Buhera DA and the Minister of State for Manicaland Dr Ellen Gwaradzimba .
Ward 15 councilor, Dampson Makichi said a woman from Ndangwe Village in Ward 15 was attacked and injured by baboons last week after she tried to protect her fowl run. He said villagers were suffering huge losses from the baboons and the marauding animals were exacerbating their precarious food situation caused by this year’s drought.
Mavhiza said that he has taken up the matter with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife.
“These baboons are attacking farms, livestock such as chickens, turkeys, ducks and small goats. As if that is not enough, they are attacking our women and children and we are being outnumbered by them and we have almost lost everything to them.
“We have reported the matter to the DA but we have not yet received any feedback or any help. The situation is getting worse by the day and it started three months back. Government needs to intervene as a matter of urgency. We are losing food to these animals,” said Makichi. Dr Gwaradzimba said that the baboons should not be killed but the National Parks should move them to parks.
Newton Mawire of Ndongwe Village under Chief Nyashanu said he lost everything in the fields, chickens and other small livestock. He said that these baboons were moving in large numbers and it was difficult to repel them. Dogs were afraid of the baboons because of their huge numbers.
