Shurugwi councillor taken to court over legal fees

    TINASHE TIRIVAVI

SHURUGWI – Shurugwi councillor Wilbert Rambanepasi has been taken to court over legal fees that he allegedly owes prominent lawyer Mapfumo Mavese.
The matter was heard in a pre-trial conference by Shurugwi resident magistrate Sithabile Zungula last week. Rambanepasi is being sued together with his sister Mirirayi Tsikira.
The matter arises from a case in which Mavese represented Tsikira in a divorce case. After the case, Rambanepasi got Mavese arrested for allegedly stealing $2 500 from a trust fund which the latter said he withdrew to cover legal costs for the divorce case.
Mavese was convicted by a lower court and forced to restitute Rambanepasi the full amount of $2 500. However Mavese made an appeal to the High Court and was cleared of the theft conviction and is now demanding that Rambanepasi and his sister return the $2 500.
Mavese is being represented by Lepord Mudisi of Mutendi, Mudisi and Shumba.
Through their lawyer … of Scanlen & Holderness Rambanepasi and Tsikira are arguing that they cannot give back the $2500 because they were allegedly overcharged. They want the charged fees to go for taxation so that the amount owed to Mapfumo is properly determined.
The date for the full trial is still to be set after all parties agreed on the matters to be heard in the full trial.
