Mucheke house catches fire as Zesa fails to respond to fault

A bed gutted by fire in Mary Kure’s bedroom.

MASVINGO – A house in Makuva Street, Mucheke A in Masvingo caught fire on Friday last week after Zesa workers allegedly failed to turn up and attend to a reported fault.
The affected family lost a bed, blankets, clothes and all gadgets that were connected to power at the time were damaged and are not functioning.
According to residents, there were sparks on a pylon near the house on Thursday the issue was reported to ZESA in Masvingo. The owner of the gutted house, Mary Kure said the ZESA workers advised her neighbour to switch off the breaker after explaining that the problem was being caused by bad weather.
Kure said the sparks continued in her bedroom and they were forced to sleep in the lounge and ZESA did not attend to the problem until the house caught fire the next day.
Zesa spokesperson Fullard Gwasira (Public Relations Manager) said they are investigating  the matter, to see if it was the fault of ZESA that caused fire or it was human error. “If someone builds his/her own house they get their own electritians and we are in the process of investigating to see if ZESA  connected the electricity”, said Gwasira.
“We were told to switch off the breaker because according to ZESA the electrical fault was due to bad weather. ZESA did not come since yesterday and they are exposing residents to serious danger,” said Wilson Hama, a resident in an interview with the Mirror.
Residents said that the fire started at around 1:20pm when the owner, Kure was not there. The neighbours had to break the door to the house and put out the fire that was quickly spreading to the lounge.
Masvingo Fire Brigade did not turn up at the incident.
“We were seated outside when we suddenly saw huge smoke from the main bedroom window. We rushed to the house but the door was locked. The owner of the house was not around and we had to break the door to get inside the house,” said Hama.
