    Mapendere gets international karate coaching certificate

    MASVINGO- Agile Masvingo karateka, Jacob Mapendere (30) has made history by becoming one of the few people in the country to receive an internationally recognized coaching certificate courtesy of International Olympic Committee (IOC) In partnership with World Karate Federation (WKF).
    Mapendere is among 20 karatekas in the country to be accorded such honours as he joins an elite class of Zimbabweans to have undergone gruesome training to obtain the certificates.
    The karatekas held a week-long training workshop at Alexander Sports Club in Harare where they were presented with certificates by Sensei Romano Guiseppe who represented WKF after the workshop.
    Mapendere said he obtained the prestigious certificate through hard work and determination. .
    “The coaching certificate will go a long way in promoting the sport in the Province through engaging schools, colleges, orphanages and the disabled.
    “It took a lot of hard-work for me to get the opportunity to be among the 20 from the country who received the certificates after a week of gruesome training at the International Olympic Committee Coaching Seminar held in Harare,” said Mapendere who was all smiles during an interview with The Mirror.
    Mapendere has since launched a karate and fitness academy, Pitbull’s and Karate Academy situated at Rujeko Community Hall and has expressed his desire to expand the Academy across the province. He also manages a Facebook page, Masvingo Fitness and Karate Centre where he uploads training videos, organises local competitions and teaches society about the sport.
    Mapendere was introduced to karate in 1994 when he was just a five-year-old boy by his late father Sensei Jacob Mapendere Senior and he has carried the flame to being a decorated karateka with two Dan blackbelts in Kyokushin and Shotokan.
    He obtained his belts in 2009, the first Dan blackbelt with International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF) and his second belt with Japan Karate Federation.
    Mapendere is the provincial karate coach and headed of the Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) karate team from 2011 till 2018 and during his tenure, the team maintained its regional dominance in competitions with the likes of Blessing Sithole and Tanaka Makonza winning multiple gold medals and being selected into the national karate team.
    The acclaimed karateka also coached at Mochudi Ikwatleng Vocational Centre in Botswana.
    “I have managed to scoop a lot of medals at national and regional competitions with my first medal in 1999 in Gweru at a Japan Karate Association Provincial Tournament. I went on to be one of the elite champions at Zimbabwe Universities Sports Association (ZUSA) games in kata and kumite for more than 3years,” he added.
    In 2017 he led Masvingo Province karate team to a provincial record 13 medals at the Zimbabwe Youth Games. The team scooped five gold medals, four silver and four bronze medals.
