BUHERA – A 15-year-old girl has tested negative after being raped on several occasions by her HIV positive step-father.
However, 39-year-old Sheunesu Chirume of Dzarova Village under Chief Makumbe in Buhera was sentenced to 20 years in prison by Rusape Regional Magistrate Livingstone Chipadza.
The sentence came after Chirume was convicted of two counts of rape.
The complainant was put under the care of Musasa Project after the crime was reported.
The complainant wrote her Grade 7 exam at Firomumwe Primary School in Gutu where she stayed with her paternal grandmother. The complainant’s mother then took her away from the grandmother whom she accused of initiating her daughter into witchcraft.
It is the State case that between June and August, 2018 the complainant was left in the custody of her step-father when her mother who is a traditional healer went out to perform rituals. Chirume took advantage of his wife’s absence and raped the complainant.
The accused was HIV positive when he raped the minor and was trying to cure the disease by sleeping with her.
He threatened the girl against disclosing the information to anyone. However, the complainant spilled the beans when Chirume chased her away from home and ran away to a neighbor identified as Mai Farai whom she told everything. She was directed to report to Buhera Police.
Police referred the matter to Musasa Shelter through the District Social Welfare and Women Affairs who then took the minor for counseling and pre-court sessions at the shelter.
    Event Dhliwayo prosecuted the case.
